The goal at Lazarus House is to provide nourishing and culturally relevant food to anyone who is hungry and comes to our door. The current economic situation is bringing increasing numbers of families to our doors for support and supplemental groceries and meals. We expect this to increase to continue for years to come.

Food Pantry

Food Pantry 5

St. Martha’s Food Pantry supplies emergency groceries to over 1000 families each week. Normally, the Pantry offers a “one-of-a-kind” shopping experience, allowing choices of food, which provides more dignity and offers greater independence and planning. The Pantry also provides the opportunity to gather as a community in comfortable surroundings as families wait to get what we have to offer that week. During the pandemic, we have pivoted to pre-bagged groceries handed out under plexiglass safety barriers to up to 1200 families each week. It’s not ideal, but it’s working, and families are grateful.

Soup Kitchen

Normally, the Good Shepherd Soup Kitchen provides freshly prepared hot meals for more than 225 people a day at breakfast and lunch sittings and offers a safe place to gather, interact, pick up some personal care items and work with our Community resource specialist to get help accessing services and completing forms. During the pandemic, we are preparing nutritious “To-Go” meals for breakfast and lunch and distributing them through our service window to keep Guests and staff safe.

Soup Truck

img_0685.jpg

In the winter months when elderly, disabled, homeless and working poor people can’t get out to the food pantry, the Soup Truck travels throughout Lawrence Friday and Sunday evenings distributing hot soup, bagged meals and winter supplies to people living in the streets. We will determine if this is safe or feasible given COVID-19 safety protocols in January of 2021.
