Position Summary:
The Shelter at Lazarus House Ministries (LHM) provides an opportunity for Guests to work through challenging situations including poverty and domestic violence and resume independent living in the future. The Shelter Case Manager will perform intakes and initial assessments as well as ongoing case management to individual single females and families entering and residing at the Shelter. The Shelter Case Manager will ensure that all Guests at the LHM Shelter are treated with dignity and respect as they are supported and assisted to move forward in achieving their individualized case management goals including future permanent housing stability.
Position Description:
- Utilizing a knowledge of the systemic issues that affect low income, newly and/or chronically homeless individuals and families, the Shelter Case Manager will apply this knowledge to do the following:
- Work with Guests to establish individualized service plans and monitor progress toward short-term and long-term goals as well as attainment of life skills.
- Monitor and assess Guest behavior and suggest strategies for improvement as needed.
- Collaborate with the Shelter Program Director to develop and deliver training to Guests and employees to address relevant issues in the Shelter environment and in case management such as daily living skills, budgeting, housing, hygiene, self-esteem, parenting, etc.
- Conduct initial intakes/assessments for Guests referred from other LHM Programs or agencies to determine appropriateness for program and ability to conform to Shelter rules and agreements.
- Along with the Shelter team, proactively identify potential challenges and minimize occurrences to provide a safe, supportive, respectful environment for Guests, staff and volunteers.
- Provide crisis intervention services, safety planning as well as information about domestic violence programs and resources.
- Provide case management for Shelter Guests to address needs and goals around life skills programming including housing, benefits, employment medical/dental care, education, legal, immigration assistance, mental health and alcohol and/or substance abuse for themselves and dependent children. Meet with Guests weekly and additionally if necessary to ensure appropriate creation, maintenance and achievement of goals of program.
- Attend community and professional trainings and share appropriate content that is relevant to direct service advocacy at the Shelter.
- Collect and maintain designated statistics and metrics for tracking progress, case load and grants in conjunction with Shelter Program Director as needed.
- Share on-call duties with the Shelter Program Director and/or Junior Advocate.
- Represent LHM at community meetings and other relevant functions.
- Fulfills other position-related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree (AA/AS) in human services, psychology or related field or a combination of applicable education and experience.
- 4+ years of progressive, hands-on experience working with individuals who are underserved and struggle with issues such as homelessness, emotional and psychological disorders and domestic violence.
Professional Skills and Qualities
- Knowledge and understanding of culture and community resources around issues such as homelessness, poverty and domestic violence.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with employees, volunteers and benefactors.
- Self-motivated professional with excellent boundaries and decision-making skills along with proficiency in de-escalation, supportive listening, outreach and working with diverse populations with complex presenting issues.
- Strong bilingual verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English are extremely desirable.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills with great attention to detail along with a focus on problem-solving and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to deal tactfully and establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others including working in a team setting, establishing rapport with persons from a different ethnicity, cultural and/or economic background, interacting with and demonstrating empathy to people who are under physical and/or emotional stress, maintaining a calm manner in stress and/or emergency situations.
- Receptive to new ideas and method as well as the ability to comfortably adapt to change.
- Maintains confidentiality and exercises sound judgment with information and situations requiring sensitivity, especially those involving Guests, employees, volunteers and benefactors.
Other Requirements
- Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
- Proficient technical skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Canva) and database management are preferred.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Communicate verbally and in written format so that others understand.
Move intermittently throughout the workday.
Remain in a stationary position 50% or more of the time.
Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a printer and photocopier.
Lift up to 40 pounds less than 15% of the time.
Must possess sight/hearing/speech senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Must be able to travel from building to building within LHM as well as to external locations.
Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
