Position Summary:

Homeless children are more likely to have experienced trauma and its associated affects, they are also at greater risk than their stably housed counterparts of experiencing delays in development, trouble in school and problems related to behavior and social functioning. The Enrichment Coordinator will develop, implement and sustain an enrichment program that will support youth and families by planning, preparing and supporting related activities such as family events, field trips, and after school and evening programs.

Position Description:

  • Collaborate with Program Directors and Case Managers in our temporary shelter and transitional housing programs to offer a high-quality enrichment program to children and families.
  • Provide care, supervision, and enrichment activities for school-aged children and families during enrichment sessions in LHM housing programs such as at Capernaum Place and our temporary shelter.
  • Support children’s emotional and social development including encouraging an understanding of others and creation of a positive self-concept while also sustaining a safe, positive environment for children and families.
  • Develop and manage a varied, structured program for a range of school-aged children (Art, Arts & Crafts, Music, STEM, homework assistance, etc.) at the end of each weekday from (3-8 p.m.) with adjusted times during vacations/summer as needed. Programing will be age appropriate and create enrichment opportunities along with providing opportunities to meet developmental milestones.
  • Create and initiate educational workshops for parents related to parenting skills, wellness, special education processes and services, etc.
  • Establish and maintain in-person, phone and email contact to enhance communication with schools, community resources and referral agencies to provide support and resources to children and families.
  • Track and promote Lawrence Public Schools calendar events and deadlines to families.
  • Set up materials and maintain cleanliness and organization in enrichment spaces.
  • Organize and coordinate yearly back to school uniform, backpack and supply distribution process.
  • Plan holiday and vacation events and field trips.
  • Maintain and report data on enrichment outcomes related to funding opportunities.
  • Along with the Volunteer Engagement team, train and supervise selected volunteers to assist in enrichment programming.
  • Represent LHM in social media posts and at community meetings and other relevant functions.
  • Participate in trainings on and implement behavior management guidelines, with topics to include early child development, trauma-informed care, use of Incident Reports, 51A’s, etc.
  • Actively participate in Resident Services team meetings as well as training and support events and other projects as needed.
  • Fulfills other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of associate’s degree plus 2 years’ experience in social work, human services or related field.
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with at-risk children, youth and parents.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) verbal communications skills required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint as well as Canva.
  • Knowledge of parenting skills, child development and how trauma affects childhood and adult behavior.
  • Public speaking experience is preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills including ability to create, plan, engage, problem solve, and follow through on initiatives.
  • Understanding of the systemic issues that affect low income, newly and/or chronically homeless families.

  • Prolonged sitting and standing, some walking, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to operate equipment pertinent to your position.
  • Lifting, moving, and carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Travel from building to building within the LHM and external locations.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse populations, including people who are homeless and/or experiencing a mental illness and/or other challenges.
  • Interact effectively with staff, guests, volunteers, benefactors, and the general public.
