Position Title: Thrift Store Staff

Reports To: Thrift Store Manager

Position Summary: This is a full time position working scheduled hours of full days Mondays through Thursdays, and Saturdays. Normally scheduled days off are Friday and Sunday. The Friday off can potentially be scheduled to a different weekday. Other hours for events and special pickups at the discretion of the Store manager and Coordinator. At the direction of the Store Manager, the Thrift Store Staff Assistant is responsible to follow all direction from Thrift Store Manager and Thrift Store Coordinator, to help ensure that all store operations run effectively and efficiently and that the spirit of the Ministry is alive in the store. Also, as required, participate in merchandise pickups assisting on the Lazarus House truck and or van, and supporting set up and take down of Lazarus House events

Position Description: Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Presents the face of the Ministry to guests, donors, volunteers and staff.
  • As assigned, Thrift Store Staff will perform cash management, store opening/closing operations, working sales counter and operating cash register, movement of merchandise, sorting of incoming donations and guest interactions, training, working with and supervising volunteers, collecting and processing all trash/recycling.
  • Ensures donors complete in-kind donation forms and are informed and educated about the Ministry’s work and its’ needs.
  • With Store Manager executes the voucher program, where applicable, ensuring that guest’s needs are met in the parameters of the program.
  • Attends regular staff meetings and assists Store Manager in fostering team building and support.
  • At direction of Store Manager, trains volunteers to ensure they know their jobs and are doing them as expected with special emphasis on customer and donor relations.
  • Participates in special events such as Ministry wide meetings, food distributions, fundraising events and community outreach as required.
  • Works with Store Manager or Coordinator to identify supplies and materials needed for the store.
  • With the Store Manager, ensures that store property and surrounding areas are clean, trash free and positively contribute to the overall appearance of the environs; identifies facility needs through Store Manager or Coordinator as appropriate.
  • Ensures donor is satisfied with his or her experience with Lazarus House.
  • Loads and unloads donated household items such as furniture, household goods and clothing at appropriate store locations, and food to the Food Pantry when needed.
  • Works with store volunteers to deliver items inside the Thrift Stores and/or Food Pantry.
  • Lifts and moves heavy items using ergonomically correct procedures.
  • Assists the Food and Events Coordinators as needed.
  • Assists at Ministry Events to ensure that materials, supplies and items are set up, moved, broken down, etc. as needed.
  • Work in any of the thrift stores or positions in the ministry as assigned to fill in for others
  • Fulfills other position related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in both English and Spanish
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to the mission of Lazarus House Ministries.
  • Understanding and support of how the Gospel foundation drives our decisions and actions throughout the Ministry.
  • Ready and able to work in a fast paced, changing environment, maintaining a positive environment for our Guests, donors and staff

Valid MA driver’s license and excellent driving record

  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance and demeanor
  • Lifting, moving and carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally (This may be 75 pounds or more when employee’s responsibilities include moving furniture and other such items).
  • Courteous, people and team-oriented with excellent inter-personal and communications skills
  • Background in retail and direct customer interaction, customer service
  • Physically capable of moving and sorting clothing, and handling and moving donations of all types.
  • Experience running a cash register and follow currency handling procedures
  • Experience working successfully with a variety of cultures
  • Bi-lingual capabilities (English – Spanish) a real plusPhysical Demands/Working Conditions: The information described here includes but is not necessarily limited to general physical requirements, demands and/or working conditions that an employee is likely to encounter at Lazarus House, Inc.   • Prolonged sitting and/or standing, some bending, stooping and stretching.
  • Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate equipment pertinent to your area- office, kitchen, warehouse, cleaning, etc.
  • Lifting, moving and carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally (This may be 75 pounds or more when employee’s responsibilities include moving furniture and other such items).
  • Travel from building to building within the Ministry and/or to external agencies.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work with or be exposed to diverse populations, including people who are homeless or have mental illness or other challenges
  • Interact effectively with staff, guests, volunteers, benefactors and the general public.
  • Manage multiple priorities
  • Able to manage the stress of the job.
