Position Title:  Development Officer, Major Gifts

Reports To:  Director of Development

Position Summary:

This position is perfect for a development professional wanting to make a significant difference in the lives of individuals and families. It is an opportunity to offer a “hand-up” to people who are poor, homeless and who are struggling to make a stable life for themselves and their children.  The  Major Gifts Officer will provide donors the opportunity to know and feel good that they have made a difference in people’s lives through their charitable investments.

The Development Officer selected will join a team of ten professionals and numerous board members and volunteers who are already raising millions of dollars each year.  This motivated team is impacting thousands of lives and is aiming to do considerably more in order to meet the growing needs of the community.

Position Description: Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage relationships with a growing pool of current and prospective major donors who have the capacity to make gifts over $1,000
  • Work with the Development Director to develop and execute the overall strategy for major gifts growth and donor acquisition
  • Responsible for working together with the Director of Development to set, trend and report on goals and metrics weekly to ensure goals are met or exceeded
  • Create, execute and track moves management strategy for all donors in assigned donor portfolio
  • Provide Development Director with weekly reports on contacts, follow-up actions, meetings, progress, donation/pledges and any other information deemed pertinent by the Development Director
  • Expand the number of major donors and total major donor dollars raised each year by a percent determined with the Development Director.
  • Work collaboratively across the Development Department (Major Gifts, Special Events, Volunteers) to ensure we’re utilizing Lazarus House’s resources as effectively as possible to cultivate, steward and solicit support
  • Become a Lazarus House “expert” and excel in sharing our Mission. Work closely with various parts of the Ministry (e.g. Shelter, Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen, etc.) to bring our story, and our guest’s stories to life for donors and prospective supporters
  • Give tours to potential and current major donors as needed as well as engage with the community via civic groups including speaking engagements, events and other networking opportunities
  • Maintain up-to-date and timely personal donor cultivation information (excluding gifts processing) in Raiser’s Edge database
  • Attend and participate in weekly Development Team meetings
  • Perform other position related duties as required


  • Demonstrate strong commitment to the mission of Lazarus House Ministries
  • Understanding and support of how the Gospel foundation drives our decisions and actions throughout the Ministry
  • 5-7 years fundraising experience including successful major gift solicitations (4 and 5 figure gifts)
  • Experience with planned giving is a plus
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of major donors in order to develop authentic relationships with them
  • Experience working with volunteers particularly at development committee and board level
  • Ability to work individually as well as in a team environment
  • Must be self-motivated and willing to work evenings and occasional weekends
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills with great attention to detail
  • Outstanding communication skills both verbal and written
  • Donor Management Systems experience, ideally Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel & Powerpoint)
  • Bachelor’s Degree; bi-lingual (English-Spanish) a plus
  • Must be willing to travel, day to day within the Greater Boston/NH area
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with both donors and guests is imperative

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

The information described here includes but is not necessarily limited to general physical requirements, demands and/or working conditions that an employee is likely to encounter at Lazarus House, Inc.  Additional requirements may arise as your employment and needs of the Ministry evolve. You must be able to handle or possess the ability to meet the following:

  • Prolonged sitting and/or standing, some bending, stooping and stretching
  • Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate equipment pertinent to your area- office, kitchen, warehouse, cleaning, etc.
  • Lifting, moving and carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally (This may be 75 pounds or more when employee’s responsibilities include moving furniture and other such items)
  • Travel from building to building within the Ministry and/or to external agencies
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work with or be exposed to diverse populations, including people who are homeless or have mental illness or other challenges
  • Interact effectively with staff, guests, volunteers, benefactors and the general public
  • Manage multiple priorities
  • Able to manage the stress of the job
