Lazarus House Ministries - News - Press Release - Hike For Hope

Lazarus House Ministries
Press Release
July 7, 2000

Lazarus House Ministries has announced plans for its first annual Hike For Hope! A 5-mile pledge walk planned for Sunday September 10, 2000 at 1:00 PM is part of an afternoon celebration in Andover, Massachusetts. The walk will begin and end at Merrimack College and take walkers into Andover Center, thru Phillips Academy and back into Merrimack College for an afternoon cookout and celebration. The walk will benefit Lazarus House Ministries currently in its 17th year of providing services to the poor and needy.

The Hike is an idea spawned by David McGillivray, Technical Director of the BAA Boston Marathon. Dave, a great supporter of the ministry will donate his time and technical and planning services to Lazarus House Ministries creating this special fundraising event. The walk has the potential to greatly impact the financial condition of the Ministry.

Lazarus House Ministries operates with an annual budget of $1.7 million. Of that amount 90% comes from private donations and foundations. Lazarus House, best known for its temporary homeless shelter is the leading provider of services to the poor in the Merrimack Valley. Daily they feed 200 plus people in their soup kitchen, offer food from their food pantry, provide free dental and medical care, clothing and necessities from their thrift stores, provide job training and English skills and continue to offer Hope of a brighter tomorrow.

We are a home to those with nowhere else to go and we help many who have exhausted all other possibilities. It’s very hard to provide for your family while working 40 plus hours a week at minimum wage jobs with your rent alone exceeding what you can earn.

Lazarus House Ministries is not offering handouts. We work hard and expect all guests to make changes in their lives so that they can move out of poverty and live their lives independently. We are not a crutch to be constantly held onto. To continue to receive our services our guests must be clean and sober, willing to work within our system and continually strive for their own independence.

Locally we have received support from Andover Bank and First Essex Bank. Additionally Pepsi will provide all beverages for the event and The American Red Cross will work with Lazarus House providing our after walk cookout. Merrimack College is proud to support the ministry by providing its grounds for the venue and the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce is working to promote the hike’s awareness.

Please consider signing up and joining this premiere event! Team leaders as well as walkers are greatly needed. The walk will be a great success with your support. For an application or for more information, please contact Lazarus House Ministries, at (978) 689-8575.
